At the Koffman, we’re not just about fostering innovation and launching startups—we’re about celebrating the amazing people who make it all happen. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Steve Pierce, our facilities manager, as he celebrates his sixth work anniversary with the Koffman Incubator.
In this Q&A, Steve offers a behind-the-scenes look at his role, where each day brings new challenges and opportunities to make an impact. Join us as we explore what it takes to keep the Koffman running smoothly and meet the person who ensures that everything operates like clockwork.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your role at the Koffman?
Steve: “I manage the physical facility, our tenants and members, the operating finances, and I’m the go-to guy for all things related to outside vendors. It’s a lot of hats to wear, but I love the variety.”
Q: That sounds like a full plate! What are some of your key responsibilities, particularly in facilities and finance management?
Steve: “It definitely keeps me on my toes! On the facilities side, I handle everything from repairs and maintenance to lease management and ensuring our tenants have everything they need. I also manage our security systems—think key cards, video surveillance, the works. On the finance side, I track all our operating expenses, help create the annual budget, and make sure the bills get paid on time. I’m also overseeing the renovations of our new building in Vestal that recently opened.”
Q: With so much going on, how does a typical day look for you?
Steve: “Honestly, there’s no such thing as a “typical day” in my position! Every day brings its own set of obstacles, which is part of what makes the job so interesting. I could be fixing something in the morning, balancing the budget in the afternoon, and meeting with a vendor by evening. It keeps things exciting for sure.”
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at the Koffman?
Steve: “Hands down, it’s the people and companies we work with. My coworkers and our member companies are all so driven and motivated, it’s inspiring to be around. The sense of community here is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in a workplace. Everyone is working hard to succeed, and that energy is contagious.”
Q: Could you highlight a few companies that have stood out to you during your time here?
Steve: “That’s a tough one because every company here is doing something amazing. What I love most is that even the smallest, unlikeliest companies can end up having a huge impact on the community. Being part of a place that genuinely cares about its startups is incredibly rewarding, and knowing that I’ve played even a small role in their success is something I’m really proud of.”
Steve’s dedication to maintaining our facility for our members and staff is what helps make the Koffman a place where startups thrive. Whether it’s managing finances, fixing facilities, or overseeing exciting new projects, Steve’s passion for his work shines through in everything he does. We are so grateful to have Steve on our team and can’t thank him enough for all that he does each day!
