Koffman Innovations: Hub Controls

Hub Controls, the Koffman's first international company to locate its US headquarters at the KSTI, is making a name for itself in the heating and cooling space in Binghamton, North America and beyond! The company's hub controller eliminates energy waste in the home through automatic energy reduction technology. The thermostat-like device uses artificial intelligence and learning tools to operate in the background and hunt for wasted energy in a building’s heating or air conditioning. North American General Manager Brian Cregan met with News Channel 34 to discuss why the team sought out Binghamton as the perfect landing place to test their product.

Accelerator and I-Corps Grad’s Language Learning Startup Forges Connections

Binghamton University Professor Marisol Marcin, saw a need for Spanish language students to speak with and learn from native Spanish speakers. Marcin took this along with her passion for education and founded Lengaus Club. After completing the Binghamton Accelerator Program and NSF I-Corps through the Koffman, Marcin's business took off.

Koffman Innovations: Ashlawn Energy

This month's Koffman Innovations feature with News Channel 34 showcases vanadium battery manufacturer Ashlawn Energy, LLC. Ashlawn, founded in 2008 by energy researcher Norma Byron, produces batteries using vanadium, a metal that, in powder form, is added to a sulfuric acid solution producing a medium that is good for storing energy. The large scale batteries power buildings more efficiently by storing electricity at low-peak rates and discharging it at high-peak times. The best part? There’s no cost to purchasing or installing the system. Ashlawn makes its revenue from grid revenue paid by the New York State Public Service Commission.

Binghamton University’s Entrepreneur Connect Club Holds West Side Community Clean Up Day

The BU Entrepreneur Connect Club (ECC) — in partnership with Financial Literacy for Youth (FLY), Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi), a professional business fraternity, Theta Tau, a professional engineering fraternity and the School of Management community service committee — organized the event with support from the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator (KSTI). Participants first met on the West Side, then, strategically collected trash across the city in different groups.

Koffman Southern Tier Incubator Company KLAW Industries awarded $500,000 from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Koffman Southern Tier Incubator startup company KLAW Industries has been awarded $500,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand their operations in Binghamton and further develop the technology behind their high-performance, low-carbon concrete product made from recycled materials.

Schumer brings Assistant U.S. Sec. of Commerce to Binghamton University, showing Biden Administration value of Southern Tier’s place in battery research

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Castillo visited Binghamton University yesterday to meet with the New Energy New York coalition members and show the Biden Administration the value of the Southern Tier's place in battery research. The visit comes just weeks after New Energy New York's $113M award for battery research and development as part of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge.

Recipe for success: Koffman company founder brings bubble tea to Binghamton University campus

When Leighton Blackwood first came to Binghamton University, he was disappointed to discover how hard it was for him to get bubble tea, one of his favorite drinks back in his hometown of Queens, N.Y. So, he set out to change that. Blackwood, who majored in business administration with a concentration in marketing, is now the founder and owner of 2nd Heaven, a campus bubble tea (also called boba) shop run out of the MarketPlace in The Union. 2nd Heaven sells juice teas, milk teas, iced teas and lattes that can be customized into over 100 possible drink combinations.

Binghamton University School of Management and Watson School of Engineering Students Tour the Koffman Incubator

The Koffman was thrilled to host students from Binghamton University's School of Management and the Watson College of Engineering on September 13th. Students received a tour of the Koffman followed by a fireside chat with Koffman company founders Matt Gill of Enhance VR and Jacob Kumpon of KLAW Industries (both Watson College alumni).
