At the Koffman, our community thrives on collaboration, creativity and the inspiring stories of the people who make it all happen. In this edition of our Employee Spotlight Series, we’re excited to feature Eric Krohn, our director of business incubation programming. From his journey in the culinary arts to guiding startups in cutting-edge industries, Eric’s story is one of passion, innovation and dedication.
In this Q&A, we’ll explore Eric’s unique background, how his path led him to the Koffman, and what fuels his drive to support entrepreneurship and help our member startups succeed.
Q: Can you share a little about your background and how you came to work at the Koffman?
Eric: “My journey began in the kitchen—quite literally! I started my career as a chef, graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. My love for gastronomy set the stage for future chapters I couldn’t yet imagine. While working as a chef, I realized I wanted to contribute in a broader capacity. This led me back to school at Marywood University, where I studied during the day and cooked by night, eventually becoming a dietitian.
During that time, I discovered a passion for invention and entrepreneurship, launching my first product and company. Back then, the department I now work for was just getting its footing in the entrepreneurial space, offering workshops and networking events that fueled my momentum. I received a call about the new Koffman Incubator and its need for a startup mentor. It took me all of a second to say yes—I knew it was my future.”
Q: What are your main responsibilities as director of business incubation programming?
Eric: “At the Koffman, our programming is centered on two focus sectors: clean energy and promising technology/innovation. I oversee the technology and innovation side, working with startups in areas such as AI software, simulators, medical devices and innovative food and agricultural products like sustainable fertilizers, beverages and cattle feed.
My role involves identifying promising companies and supporting them as they grow—from initial business design to Series A funding. Additionally, I work to strengthen our network so it can continue to meet the needs of our expanding community of entrepreneurs.”
Q: What do you find the most rewarding about your role?
Eric: “The people. My team and our member companies inspire me every day. We face challenges, celebrate wins and grow together—it’s like being part of a second family.
Watching startups thrive, from early brainstorming sessions to major milestones, is incredibly fulfilling. There’s something magical about being surrounded by people who share a passion for building something extraordinary.”
Q: How would you describe the culture at the Koffman?
Eric: “When the Koffman first opened, we had many conversations about culture—how to create it, how to define it and how to let members and the community take part in this definition. I am quite proud of how our culture has progressed.
The Koffman is a community of people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company—whether we’re meeting up for member luncheons or brainstorming how to improve or expand business offerings. It’s also a place where we all learn together. It’s no surprise that so many people are asking to become co-workers at the Koffman; the creative energy here is both thrilling and comforting.”
Q: What hobbies and interests do you enjoy outside of work?
Eric: “Although I’ve stepped away from professional cooking, my love for preparing food hasn’t diminished. I find it meditative, and the more stressful my week, the fancier the meals I like to create. Sharing those meals with others brings me joy.
When I’m not in the kitchen, I indulge my passion for cars. Spirited drives with friends or my car club are the perfect way to unwind and reset.”
From the kitchen to the cutting edge of innovation, Eric brings unmatched passion and expertise to the Koffman Incubator. His story is a testament to the power of following your passions and embracing new opportunities.
