The American Concrete Institute has recognized KLAW Industries and the City of Binghamton with an Award of Merit for making cost-effective, sustainable infrastructure a reality.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BINGHAMTON, N.Y., June 15, 2023- KLAW Industries and the City of Binghamton have gained national recognition for their curb and sidewalk upgrades by receiving an award of merit from the American Concrete Institute.
The award is given to groundbreaking projects using innovative materials to create stronger, cleaner concrete and highlights the City’s Low-Carbon Infrastructure Project. This recognition comes after Mayor Jared Kraham announced Binghamton’s partnership with KLAW for $1.7 million worth of curb and sidewalk upgrades throughout the City.
KLAW uses a patent-pending process to turn recycled glass into a partial replacement for cement in concrete mixes, called Pantheon™, allowing concrete producers to prevent approximately 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from every truck load. Coming with no extra cost to the taxpayers, the City of Binghamton is an example of how municipalities across New York can make a difference in our communities by using cost-effective and sustainable materials.
The recycled glass is also locally sourced from Taylor Garbage, who have been working with KLAW from the start to keep recycled materials out of landfills and find the best use for our unwanted glass waste.
“Our partnership with KLAW Industries has been a massive success for both of our organizations, allowing us to find a strong and impactful end market for our recycled materials,” said Dave McPeek, compliance manager at Taylor Garbage. “As a family-owned company, supporting growing businesses bringing recycling innovations to our area is one of the ways we are making the world a better and greener place while serving our community.”
Construction Materials company Barney & Dickenson continues to provide concrete for the City of Binghamton projects and was also recognized through this award for taking a leadership role in bringing the next generation of concrete materials to the industry. Barney & Dickenson has been working with KLAW since 2019 to develop high-performance, low-carbon concrete and has gained a reputation as one of the most innovative concrete producers in the Northeast.
“The projects with Binghamton have been a huge success,” said Mary Murphy Harrison, president of Barney & Dickenson. “KLAW has come a long way since we started working with them in 2019, and we are proud to display this award in our office alongside over 85 years of history.”
Binghamton’s partnership with KLAW continues this year with more projects throughout the City, in collaboration with Albert Torto Construction Corp.
“These companies are staples of our community, and it is great to see the recognition for their work in leading the industry forward,” said Jacob Kumpon, COO of KLAW Industries. “This is another example of how Binghamton is laying the foundation for new infrastructure development across the country.”
Founded in Binghamton University’s Koffman Southern Tier Incubator in 2019, KLAW Industries has now hired its first employee and raised $1.2 million — investing this money into the company’s facility on the East Side of Binghamton to expand its production capacity. With support from the Environmental Protection Agency and their recent feature in Forbes, KLAW has a full year of projects coming up.
