The Koffman Southern Tier Incubator hosted a press conference on Wednesday, May 29, where Mayor Jared Kraham announced the winners of the 2024 Binghamton Local Development Corporation (BLDC) Business Plan Competition. The event highlighted Binghamton’s ongoing commitment to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship in the Southern Tier.
Civic Alert Systems Takes First Place
Civic Alert Systems, co-founded by Vestal natives Ryan Crist and Jason Duda, won the first-place prize of $5,000. Their innovative platform allows local governments to communicate directly with residents in real-time during emergencies and unplanned events. The win also comes with additional support, including legal counsel, accounting services, and a one-year membership in the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce. The company plans to set up office space at the Koffman following the competition.
Eric Krohn, Director of Business Incubation Programming at the Koffman, expressed his excitement: “The Koffman is incredibly proud to support this competition year after year. By helping startups grow, we aim to improve our community and make a positive impact globally. We are thrilled to see our member companies excel and are committed to their continued success.”
Mayor Kraham added, “For nearly 15 years, the Binghamton business plan competition has recognized some of our area’s brightest innovators and provided a springboard to help entrepreneurs succeed. As this year’s winner, Civic Alert Systems has already tapped into the well of resources our community has available for startups and will receive additional support to grow their business in the months ahead.”
Second Place: UMAHARI
UMAHARI, another Koffman member, secured the second-place prize of $2,000. Founded by Dr. Alok Adholeya, UMAHARI is developing sustainable, biologics-based plant fertilizers. The startup is exploring the establishment of a pilot manufacturing facility in Binghamton, further contributing to local economic growth.
Third Place: 2nd Heaven
In third place, 2nd Heaven, a bubble tea business owned by Binghamton University alum Leighton Blackwood, received a $500 prize. After finding success on campus, 2nd Heaven is now looking to expand into downtown Binghamton, continuing its growth journey with support from the Koffman.
